What is my philosophy of education?

My personal philosophy of education includes teaching, knowledge, learning, learning styles, goals, and content. Education needs to be taught by someone who has advanced knowledge and content on the specific subject that they are teaching to enable their student/learner to learn the subject to the best of their ability. Teaching has many methods and techniques to it as learning also has many techniques to it. Not every student/learner is able to learn the same way. A student/learner may be really good at English but really bad at maths or really good at art and bad at science and vice versa, it does not mean that they are not smart or are being lazy with their learning, it just means that they may be better with words than with numbers. This can be the same for all types of learning not just school related, an example of this could be making coffee or being a sales person. It is skills that you have to learn for your job but not something you learn in the education system. Every individual has a preferred way of learning. Some learning methods are linguistic which is a verbal technique being both written and spoken, logical which is your ability to reason and solve problems using numbers, visual which is learning information through seeing it an example of this being pictures, kineasthetic which is learning through physical activity, musical which is learning through sound and music, interpersonal is having a strong social style that helps you communicate with people and would be good for group projects, intrapersonal is being more private and independent which is good for individuals projects, and lastly naturalist which works with exploring the environment. I believe the teacher needs to have an understanding about the different methods to teaching and the different techniques of every individual student to allow the student to reach their goals and learn the most of the content that they can to their best ability. The learner however also needs to participate and be willing to learn. Learning must engage with and enlarge personal experience and equip all students to actively participate in civil society (and democracy) – John Dewey/

Why do I believe this to be true? What is the evidence for this? And can this be challenged?

I believe that the teachers needs to understand what they are teaching and have an advanced knowledge on their subject so that they are able to teach others what they know with out getting any of the facts incorrect so that the knowledge of the subject can continue to be taught through generations without any of it being wrong. I believe the teaching methods to be true as I believe everyone learns differently as some people are more artistic while other are more mathematic etc and therefore would prefer to learn in the way that suits them best. There have been a number of studies to prove the idea of learning styles however this can also be challenged through the validity and reliability of the test styles.

Why does education matter?

Individual – Education matters for an individual because most jobs today require a certain amount of an education level to be able to be hired so if an individual doesn’t have the required education needed then the likeliness of them getting a job that will set up their future is slim to none and without a job they won’t have the money to survive and will struggle with everyday life. Money is in our every day lives from food to having a house to clothes. Education also helps for people to understand how the world works.

Society – Education matters for society because we need the world to be able to progress and to do so we need to learn about past mistakes and move on from them and ensure they don’t happen again so that the future is brighter than the past. We need education so that the world can be the absolute best that it can. A few examples of past mistakes to learn from are war, oppression, discrimination and equality.

Why do I believe this to be true? What is the evidence for this? And can this be challenged?

I believe that education matters for an individuals future as you need education for every day life and to simply understand the way the world works and to also enhance society. There is a lot of data, research and studies to show the impact impact has on a person and society. Many people wouldn’t challenge the importance of education however if someone wanted to then they could suggest that, way before education was a huge factor their were people living life and surviving without having the type of education we have now and they were living successfully, an example of this being Indigenous people.

How should education work in the world?

Education should be something that every single person should be able to access. There are 3 main steps to education. Curriculum which is providing schools, teachers, parents, students and the community with a clear understanding of what students should learn. A set of knowledge and skill required for learning, social development and more, assessments which is reflecting and monitoring their progress to inform their future learning goals and using this to improve student learning through knowledge, skill, attitudes and belief, pedagogy which is the method and theory of the practice of teaching and practice of learning and how this process influences and is influenced by

Why do I believe this to be true? What is the evidence for this? And can this be challenged?

I personally believe that I feel this to be true because it is what I have grown up with and what I have grown to know, I have not know education to be any other way than curriculum, assessments and pedagogy. All though I feel like there are positives and negatives to the education system, I would not know what is best for everyone. I agree with Henry Giroux when he said “critical pedagogy becomes a project that stresses the need for teachers and students to actively transform knowledge rather than simply consume it.” even though pedagogy is what I have always known, as I said there are negatives and I believe this to be one of them. The evidence that this works is through data of individuals success after high school. This can be challenged by hearing peoples personal experiences of school and being taught to see if it actually was the best for them or not.

What is education for?

Individual – education is to ensure that every individual is able to have the knowledge to understand the world to then ensure that the understanding they have will make their lives and the quality of their lives better by giving them an understanding of work, money, every day life and their future and how the world works so that the individual can do their best to give them the best life and find a job that makes them happy and live comfortably. Education helps with making an individual choose if they with to continue with more education or head straight into providing a life for themselves.

Society- Education help to enhance society and how we work and grow. It does this by teaching us about the past, present and future in hopes that we can make society and the world the best place it can be. We need to learn from our mistakes to ensure it does not happen again so we can progress in hopes that one day the world with be equal in all aspects for everyone.

Why do I believe this to be true? What is the evidence for this? And can this be challenged?

I believe that individuals need as much general knowledge as they can to live the best life that they can. An individuals education does not need to go all the way if they choose for it not too as long as they have a general knowledge so that they feel comfortable and prepared for the world and what it will bring. The way to learn about that is through education. With this knowledge the individual can then get their best life through finding the right job, getting money, learning how to use that money properly and how to have a roof over their heads and food. General knowledge does not just help with the world but it helps with basic every day needs. I believe that society needs education to learn from the past. If we did not know what was happening in the world wether it be past or present then the world could be doing the same thing over and over everywhere and because we have not learnt the consequences then the world will continue to break and society will fall apart and people will turn against each other in stead of helping each other. As Paulo Freire said “Looking at the past must only be a means of understanding more clearly what and who they are so that they can more wisely build the future.” The evidence for this is the change between racism, homophobia, sexism, poverty and many more issues. Education has proved to help with equality and change the world for the better however equality is still being and probably will always be challenged by those who do not believe in equality for all. I believe that society would not have grown as much as it has without education and I believe that with education we will continue to grow and be better in the future.
